Past and future go hand in hand at the Museu de Finestrat to tell the rich history of this municipality
Visiting museums is an extraordinary leisure option in any season of the year. Finestrat has an emblematic museum, located in the centre of a beautiful urban park, that of Mayor Miguel Llorca, which reviews the extensive history of this municipality since the first human settlements were evident in the Upper Palaeolithic. In it you can see the archaeological remains of thousands of years divided into four historical stages: Prehistory, the Ancient Age, the Middle Ages and the Modern and Contemporary Age.
At the Museum, the old and the new have been going hand in hand since 2023. The amphorae displayed in the showcases have coexisted, for just over two years, with the screens that allow visitors to use new technologies to have audiovisual information that allows them to learn about the historical heritage in a global and broad way. local and cultural. In addition, digitization offers the coordinates of the places so that, if they wish, at the end of the visit they can physically go to the place where the archaeological remains or historical events were found.
What we went should not be too surprising, as we are located on the shores of the Mediterranean. Although it is true that the waters that bathe the municipality are the westernmost, it is also true that it is a small sea and that human beings soon demonstrated their audacity to look for new places to expand and, with this, made this small corner of Alicante's geography participate in the enormous cultural exchanges. technological and commercial technologies that have led us to what it is today.
It is known that since the fourth century BC the municipality of Finestrat is one of the most important Iberian settlements in the province of Alicante. The Tossal de La Cala is its main exponent and others of singular importance have been documented in recent years, so it is increasingly certain that this small town in the Marina Baixa was one of the gateways to this oriental world. This flowering of the Iberian culture also indicates the proliferation of Roman sites in the area. From the second century BC onwards, structures and materials related to the Romanisation of the municipality have been documented.
The archaeological remains and explanations of all these historical stages can be seen in the Museu de Finestrat. It is a good family leisure option to enjoy the weekend. The opening hours to visit the museum are Thursday, Friday and Saturday, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., and on Sundays, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Admission is free.
